Myths Can’t Be Translated

SOCIETY & PRACTICES

Conflicting and tricky studies have been made across cultures, how bald men relates on the attraction scale. Certain studies linked to it depicts that bald men are less attractive whereas for some they are pleasant in looks. Projected social assumption for male pattern hair loss include baldness as a sign of dominance, social status or longevity.

MYTHS

Many myths are given concerning the possible causes of baldness and its relationship with one’s masculinity, intelligence, ethnicity, job, social status, bank balance etc. While disbelief may be justified in many cases due to lack of scientific validation, some claims may have a degree of fundamental truth and promoted by research.

“You obtained baldness from your mother’s father”

  • A 50% possibility exists for a person to share the same X chromosome as his maternal grandfather. Because women have two X chromosomes, they have two copies of the androgen receptor gene, while men only have one. However, a person with a balding father also has a considerably higher chances of going through hair loss.

“Weight training and other physical exercises”

  • As it increases the testosterone levels, putting forward the perception that weight training and other forms of physical activities increases the hair loss in the predisposed individual. Although scientific studies do support a equivalence between exercise and testosterone, no direct study has found a link between exercise and baldness.

“Baldness can be caused by emotional stress, sleep distress etc”

  • Emotional stress has been shown to put forward baldness in genetically affected individuals.Stress due to sleep distress enables lower testosterone levels. Stress due to sleep deprivation in fit males is unlikely to raise DHT, which causes male pattern baldness. Whether it can cause hair loss by some other reason is not clear.

“Bald men are more potent than others”

  • Levels of free testosterone are strongly linked to libido and DHT levels, but unless free testosterone is virtually non existent, sure level is not depicted that affect virility. Men with androgenic alopecia are more likely to have a higher baseline of free androgen. Hair loss is intensifying and free testosterone declines with age, a male’s hairline may be more indicative of his past than his present inclination.

“Frequent discharge causes baldness”

  • Many misconceptions exist about what can help to prevent hair loss, one of these is lack of sexual activity will automatically prevent hair loss. While a proven direct relation exists between increased frequency of ejaculation and increased levels of DHT. About 5% of testosterone is converted to DHT, ejaculation does not raise DHT levels. Singular study is not enough, especially in baldness, where there is a complex with age.
