Tattoo Removal Treatment

Wish To Get Rid Of Your Permanant Tattoo ?

Tattooing is the permanent insertion of ink/ pigments below the top layer of the skin by a sharp instrument. Tattooing isn’t something new. For thousands of years, tattoos have been an integral part of cultures across the world. From the tattoos that were found on Otzi- a 5000-year-old mummified body that was found in the Alps, to the latest tribal and Celtic designs, to the tattoos today which is not only a fashion statement but also a personal choice to have a permanent mark on the skin. Right since the Neolithic era to today, they have been used a lot, be it for ritualistic or cosmetic purposes.

Until a few years ago, permanent tattoo removal techniques included painful and scarring procedures. Solutions for removal were limited to sanding, cutting, and burning the skin. So unless the desire to get rid of a tattoo was worth such a painful process, tattoos were seen as irreversible and permanent.

Whether the desire to get a tattoo is a result of social, cultural, or physical reasons, people often tend to go great lengths to get the job done. But the permanence of tattoos has always been an issue. What happens when that tattoo you thought was so cool 20 years ago just isn’t cool anymore? Or if something you got inked is no longer relevant to you several years later?

Today, however, this is no more the scenario, thanks to advances in the field of dermatology. Now, permanent tattoo removal is effective and safe too. With processes such as dermabrasion, salabrasion, surgical excision, chemical peels, and laser surgery, surgeons today can help you get rid of your permanent tattoo!

Laser Tattoo Removal

Laser tattoo removal has come a long way in the last few years. Today, it is available at a much lower cost compared to the time it was first introduced to the public.

How does laser tattoo removal work?

Laser tattoo removal works by emitting short pulses of intense light. This light passes through the outer layers of the skin, without causing any harm, but is such that it is absorbed by the tattoo pigment. Exposure to this laser light causes the tattoo color pigment to fragment into smaller bits. These bits are such that they get removed by the immune system naturally and get flushed out of the body. Over time, the tattoo fades and eventually disappears completely.

The laser tattoo removal process

Professional tattoo application artists make use of highly pigmented granules to apply a tattoo. Such pigmented granules penetrate the dermal layer.

First, an anesthetic cream is applied to the targeted area. This helps to dull the sensation and reduce any discomfort. Then the laser is exposed, which directs pulses of light onto the tattoo. This breaks up the pigment. Over a few weeks, the body’s scavenger cells remove the residue by flushing it out the body system.

But it is not as simple as mere exposure to laser light. Tattoos are made in different colors. The laser light is monochromatic. So the color of the tattoo decides the appropriate wavelength of the laser to be used. Like, for example, a green laser beam is the most effective in removing red pigment tattoo (as the green light is readily absorbed by the red chromophore) and so on. Also, it is far easier to remove red and yellow pigments compared to the blue and blacks. Therefore, laser tattoo removal and its selection are based on several factors that include pulse duration, the penetration depth, the inclusive diameter of the tattoo, the absorption spectrum of the same, etc.

Does laser tattoo removal hurt?

Laser tattoo removal doesn’t hurt but could be described as an uncomfortable process. To be put in straight terms, for anyone who can bear the discomfort of sitting through the actual tattoo making the process, the laser removal process isn’t as uncomfortable as the application. The application is a bit more uncomfortable! The feeling one gets while the laser tattoo removal process can be described as a feeling of being pinged with a rubber band.

How long does the process take?

Any tattoo removal would require more than one sitting, the average being between 5 to10 sittings. The process only takes a few minutes for each session. The number of sessions is dependent on the size of the tattoo, the kind of ink that was used, the depth of the tattoo, the location of the tattoo the body, the colors used, the health of the patient and a few other parameters. Fading of the tattoo generally gets evident from about two weeks after treatment. The next session is usually scheduled a month later.

Is it guaranteed that the tattoo would entirely disappear?

Well, it usually does disappear, but it is impossible to predict how a particular ink will respond to laser treatment. There are more than 100 tattoo inks that are used by professional tattoo artists all over the world. And, actually, none of them are regulated by the FDA.

Generally, a black ink tattoo is effectively removed, while colors like red, dark blue, pink, and other warmer colors respond decently well. But, results with colors like white, yellow, orange and green, fluorescent or acrylic dyes have seen variable outcomes. So although no guarantee is actually given, in a maximum of the cases the tattoo completely disappears!

Alternatives To Laser Tattoo Removal

The market does have a few tattoo removal creams which claim to be able to remove tattoos. But take our word- Such creams are costly and a waste of time as they are outright ineffective. Such creams claim to slough off skin cells layer by layer, but the truth is the tattoo pigmentation is placed deep under the surface of the skin. So it is rare if the cream can actually ever reach the pigment layer.

A few other alternatives for permanent tattoo removal include dermabrasion, cutting the tattoo out of the skin, chemical peel, Salibrasion, etc. But all such techniques leave a damage mark on your skin. So you end up only replacing a permanent tattoo with permanent scarring or pigmentation!

As compared to all the other techniques available for permanent removal, laser tattoo removal is the most ideal choice. It is a non-ablative technique and gives the desired results in merely a few sittings, with no harm.
