What Are Aging Issue ?

Ageing issues are the side effects of ageing on our skin. These changes take place naturally as one’s age increases. The skin loses its moisture and becomes rough. The loss of elastic tissues makes it slack. It develops lesions and looks transparent due to the thinning of dermis and epidermis. The blood vessels become thinner, making it more prone to bruising.

The skin gets loose due to fat loss below the face skin. This makes the skeleton peek from the skin more and the eyes look sunken. This is supported by bone loss and cartilage loss on the nose.

The youthfulness of our skin depends on the right amount of hydration, oxygen, elastin, and collagen in our skin. Any issue in them becomes an issue for the skin. Let’s understand skin ageing more deeply.

Types Of Aging Issue

Intrinsic ageing

Ageing is a natural process. No matter what we do, we all are going to age. And this natural ageing depends a lot on one’s genes. This genetic ageing is known as Intrinsic ageing. And it shows the following signs:

  • Sagging skin
  • Age spots
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Dry, thin and transparent skin
Mechanical ageing

The facial movements start showing up as lines on the skin after the age of 30-40. These lines are most likely to appear on the forehead, nose, upper cheeks, temples and near the mouth. Also sleeping position starts showing its impact in the later years. These are known as sleep creases. They become visible on cheeks, between eyebrows and temples and on the side of the forehead.

Extrinsic or environmental ageing

Gravity makes the skin to hang below after it’s lost its elasticity. Also if one undergoes harsh acne treatments, it dries out the skin. And dry skin is more prone to ageing effects.

What Causes Ageing?

Primary factors are involved in triggering ageing related issues whereas secondary factors are responsible for accelerating ageing.

PRIMARY FACTORS AFFECTING SKIN AGEING
  • Sun Exposure – Chronic exposure to UV light causes structural instability by causing the breakdown of elastin and collagen fibres inside our skin. It results in the appearance of age spots, wrinkles, fine lines and other signs of premature ageing.
  • Smoking – Smoking accelerates the ageing process and causes premature wrinkles. Tobacco can quicken the natural process of ageing by triggering skin degeneration. Smoking can cause an accumulation of free radicals in the skin, which can damage it and delay its healing mechanisms. It can decrease the capillary blood flow to the skin thus depriving it from oxygen and essential nutrients
  • Dehydration – As we age, our skin loses its ability to retain water. If our skin stays dehydrated, it dries out and eventually develops fine lines or wrinkles.
SECONDARY FACTORS AFFECTING SKIN AGEING
  • Smoking – Given that age, complexion and sun exposure is the same, smokers will have more wrinkles compared to the non-smoker. Smoking makes healthy oxygen molecules to go unstable and overactive. These are called free radicals. They lead to premature wrinkling by damaging the cells.
  • Alcohol Consumption – Alcohol is harsh on the skin and dehydrates it. This damages the skin and makes you age faster.
  • High-stress levels –The high-stress level at a young age results in dry and itchy skin. Also, the look we carry on the face when we are stressed adds to the wrinkles later on. Stressed people are less active which results in ageing.

Diagnosis For Sudden Appearance Of Ageing:

A dermatologist is the best person to help you identify ageing changes you may be suffering from and its potential causes. After a thorough examination, your doctor may suggest a treatment that addresses your ageing issues and is suitable for your skin type.

Are You At Risk For Premature Aging?

No one can escape aging changes , but people who work long hours in the sun are susceptible to develop signs of ageing earlier than others. Also, those who smoke or consume alcohol regularly have a higher chance of developing premature wrinkles.

Prevention Of Skin Aging

We should be aware of the effects of whatever we put in our bodies. There are bad foods and there are good ones. Making the right choices not only make you fitter but also makes your skin look younger. Also, a nutrient-packed balanced diet makes you stay in normal weight, not too thin or not too fat. This supports the health of your skin.

To overcome stress one should try meditation and other such stress controlling activities. Pay attention to your mindset. A happy positive mindset is less likely to make one’s body look older and the skin ageing. Because the joy inside always shows up outside.

Outer prevention

One can easily delay skin ageing by protecting the skin from outside. Avoid going out in the sun during peak hours. The habit of protecting the skin from direct sunlight by covering it up or wearing a hat can go far in avoiding skin loosening and skin cancer. Also using sunscreen should be a part of daily life.

On the other hand, regular workouts help in preventing premature ageing and also keep your body in good shape.

To avoid sleeping creases, try sleeping on your back most of the time. If started early this can help prevent them or save them from getting worse if they are already showing up.

Too much use of perfumes, antiperspirants, soaps and taking too many hot baths can result in dry skin. Moisturizers should be used to prevent dry skin.
