When and How to Wash Your Hair After a Hair Transplant
A new graft is a living follicle in a small slit. For two days it is held by a clot, not by healed skin. A shower jet, a nail, or a towel rub can lift it. The first 48 hours
Most surgeons wait 24 to 48 hours. Some wait 48 to 72. jcasonline.com starts washing at 24 to 48 hours so grafts can adhere. fuemalaysia.com waits 48 to 72 hours. saraswathospital.com says do not touch the scalp for 48 hours. drcaymaz.com uses lukewarm water and no nail pressure.
Sleep on your back. Skip caps and sweat. Call us if bleeding, swelling, or burning exceeds your sheet. Do not wash that away.

wimpole.com starts the cup method on day 3 and normal washing near day 11, once a day. clinicryan.com treats the first two days as rest. Do not peel crusts.
Cup-pour method
shapiromedical.com recommends cup pouring. hartransplantation.dk says pat foam on with flat fingertips, then rinse with a cup or a low-pressure flow, never a jet. Clean the donor area a bit more freely.
- Fill a cup with lukewarm water.
- Pour over the scalp. Keep the cup off the grafts. Block a hard shower with your hand.
- Foam clinic shampoo, or a mild baby shampoo, in your palms, or dilute it and pour.
- Pat it on for one to two minutes. No rub and no nails.
- Rinse until the foam is gone. Pat dry or air dry. No hot dryer.
Call the same day if a graft moves.
Shampoo, scabs, and itch
Use the shampoo supplied for two weeks. A mild or sulfate-free shampoo is the backup. Sulfates can sting healing skin. A light conditioner may soften crusts later. Skip oils and home mixes.
Itch is healing, not a scratch cue. Most scabs loosen from day 8 to day 14. Leave any crust that sticks.

A wash cannot fix the wrong plan
Washing keeps grafts in place. It cannot correct a bad diagnosis. Telogen effluvium and scarring alopecias are not pattern loss. We scan at follicular level, then pick DFI Ultimate, ActiveFUE, or a hybrid. Surgery only moves hair you already have. PRP can support native hair. It is not a crust treatment.
Which method is best depends on donor density, hair thickness, and stable loss. No-shave work is possible in some cases.
