Dos and Don’ts After a Hair Transplant

The hair transplant surgery itself is a simple procedure and if you have friends who have undergone the treatment, they can vouch for this. However, not much is discussed about post care. Clinics like ours do offer free post care for our patients and our doctors keep in touch with the patients to support them.

However, it is important to mention that post care treatment requires effort from the patient’s side as well and this is important for you to understand before getting a hair transplant. There are some simple Dos and Don’ts given below.

What to Expect

Hair transplant is extremely safe and reliable treatment for restoring hair. However, it is not a miracle in any way. Some of our hair are always in resting phase. This means they are not experiencing any growth. Once you get a hair transplant, you will see these hair follicles fall out after some time. This is sometimes referred to as the shock of the treatment. However, do not worry. This is completely normal, limited to short term and causes a minor hair loss. Keep taking the medications, laser treatment and derma roller sessions as advised. These solutions would clean the DHT deposited at the roots of your hair follicles and would give the best chance for your hair to grow.

Swelling

One might experience a little swelling after a hair transplant surgery. The doctors at our clinics would prescribe you medications to reduce the swelling. This happens for about 10% of our patients and isn’t a cause of concern. However, it is important that you take the medication as prescribed and not touch the area of the scalp where swelling is occurring. If you continuously touch the damaged area, you could affect the quality of your transplanted grafts.

Washing

Washing the scalp regularly and taking care of it is really important after getting a hair transplant. The good thing about a hair transplant is, you can take care of your head just like you used to once the surgery is completed. This means you can go back to using a shampoo and maintain a clean and hygienic scalp to promote hair growth.

Itching

One can also experience mild itching on the scalp. It is important not to react impulsively and scratch the scalp. Scratching the scalp after a hair transplant can damage the hair follicles and your scalp as well. Our doctors would prescribe you medications for these. Contact our doctors if you experience the itching sensation regularly.

Exercise

A lot of our patients hit the gym regularly. It is important for them to know whether they can go right back to the gym after a hair transplant. Although patients certainly feel fine and can go to the gym, usually we advice patients to rest for some time after a hair transplant. During a strenuous physical exercise like lifting, weights can shift blood and oxygen in the body to the process of muscle building. Hence, rest is advised to patients for some time to support their hair growth in the best possible manner.
